A much better performance from Everton but not enough
to prevent them exiting from The Carling Cup.Given
their history in Cup competitions this season I bet
they'll be glad to get back to dragging themselves
away from the relegation zone. There's definitely
better days ahead for David Moyes and let's hope he's
around long enough to see them.

They will be delighted to have a striker like Baros
back on board again after his injury problem.Villa
have been dogged by injury problems for as long as I
can remember-goodness knows what they'd be like if

Yes a very good result for Leicester and fully
deserved to against a Cardiff side going so well too.A
cup run will boost the coffers at the Walker Stadium
and obviously be a boost to the players
confidence. Some big names have gone crashing out so
anyone could win it now IMO.

Doctors 'not giving up on Best'

George Best received a liver transplant in 2002

Football legend George Best remains seriously ill in hospital, but "we are not giving up", his consultant says.
Professor Roger Williams said Best, 59, had an unexplained bowel infection, which was causing internal bleeding, but stressed that he remained stable.
The ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland star was admitted to Cromwell Hospital in London three weeks ago, suffering flu-like symptoms.
Best, who had a liver transplant in 2002, is not thought to be conscious.
'Nasty complication'
Professor Williams said on Thursday evening: "His condition is stable but he does have a particularly nasty complication with bleeding from his bowel.
GEORGE BEST'S HEALTH
March 2000: Severe liver damage diagnosed
February 2001: Treated for pneumonia
April 2001: Anti-alcohol pellets implanted into his stomach
July 2002: Undergoes liver transplant
November 2004: Routine operation to check on liver transplant
October 2005: Treated for kidney infection in intensive care

Best's frequent health scares
Decline of the golden boy

"It is a complication that we don't fully understand, we don't know why this is happening and have, this afternoon, changed all of his antibiotics to try to get on top of it."
He said microbiologists had confirmed that the infection was not linked to MRSA and added: "I can't say how serious the infection is and the bleeding comes and goes.
"I have looked after him for a long time and we are not giving up."
He said that Best "still had every chance of pulling through this".
He added: "The chances of that, I couldn't put a figure on it, it would be just a guess.
"He's a very tough fighter, he's been through many other crises," he said.
He said the problems were not directly linked to Best's replacement liver, which was functioning well.
But he has previously said Best is more susceptible to illness due to medication to suppress the immune system and prevent his body rejecting the liver.

Prayers
Ex-wife Alex Best has said: "I am just praying that, once again, he somehow manages to pull through against all the odds. My thoughts and prayers are with him."
Son Calum, who visited the private hospital on Thursday, earlier told the BBC his father's condition was "touch and go".
Best scored 178 goals in 466 appearances for Manchester United

Best's agent, Phil Hughes, brought him to Cromwell Hospital earlier this month to be treated for flu-like symptoms including shortness of breath.
The ex-footballer developed a kidney infection and has not left the hospital since. He was admitted to intensive care.
Best was arguably the most naturally gifted British footballer of his generation.
He made his professional debut for Manchester United in 1963, aged 17, and helped the club become the first English side to lift the European Cup, in 1968.
He was voted both English and European Footballer of the Year that season and also won 37 caps for Northern Ireland.

Hearts target Ranieri and Robson

Romanov wants football director

Hearts have spoken to Sir Bobby Robson and former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri about the vacant manager's position at Tynecastle.
Chief executive Phil Anderton met with both men in Edinburgh as he looks for a replacement for George Burley.
A club spokesman said: "We can confirm talks with various applicants, including both Ranieri and Robson.
"That is in line with the type of pedigree that we are looking for and we are encouraged by the talks so far."
Ranieri managed Chelsea from 2000 to 2004, taking them to second in the English Premiership, before he was replaced with Jose Mourhino.
He has also managed at Fiorentina and Atletico Madrid and his second stint at Valencia ended in February after just eight months.
Ranieri, who also steered Chelsea to a Champions League semi-final, told BBC Sport he was keen for a return to English football earlier this month.
The 53-year-old is currently living in Rome, doing occasional media work.
Former England and Newcastle boss Robson is 20 years older than the Italian but is also being considered by ambitious Hearts.
We've had well over 20 expressions of interest from top quality managers

George Foulkes
Hearts chairman

Hearts chairman George Foulkes said: "I would prefer not to talk about the individual arrangements because we don't want it all to take place in the media - but Bobby Robson is one of the people we are looking at, there's no doubt about that.
"We've had well over 20 expressions of interest from top quality managers, household names with great experience which confirms what I said that this is a plum job.
"We're sounding out people, we're having informal discussions with people and it will take some time to do that.
"Some of them are in other parts of the United Kingdom and some are overseas.
Hungary coach Lothar Matthaus is thought to be interested in the post, along with ex-Parma boss Nevio Scala.
Hearts are also keen to talk to sacked Republic of Ireland boss Brian Kerr.
Anderton told the club website on Wednesday: "I am close to finalising a short-list and every one of them is a manager with top-class European pedigree.
"My sole concern is to ensure the board are presented with a selection of managers that can deliver success."
Burley parted company with the SPL leaders following a disagreement with Vladimir Romanov, reportedly concerning the major shareholder's interference with team affairs.
Interim boss John McGlynn has said he could be interested in the vacancy but is unlikely to have the public profile demanded by majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov.
"I would not knock the job back," he said.
"I'm not saying I am putting my hat into the ring but if I was offered it then it would be an honour and a privilege to take it."

Henry doubtful for Spurs contest

Thierry Henry's career statistics

Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is a major doubt for the north London derby after suffering a setback in his recovery from a groin injury.
Henry returned from six weeks out in the Champions League win against Sparta Prague last week but is struggling.
"There is a bit of uncertainty about Thierry," said manager Arsene Wenger. "He had a little bit of a setback.
"We pushed him in early and need to get him completely back to where he can perform. He is 30-70 against playing."
Henry wil play - this is all part of Wenger's mind games

From GS

Henry scored twice against Sparta to earn his side victory and then played 90 minutes in the 1-0 win over Manchester City four days later.
Wenger does have better news with Jose Antonio Reyes returning to fitness after bruised ribs and Freddie Ljungberg after a hamstring injury.

Gascoigne named as Kettering boss

Gascoigne has never previously managed a football club

Paul Gascoigne has taken his first managerial role in football after being named as boss of Kettering Town.
The 38-year-old - part of a consortium that has taken over the club - will work with former Arsenal midfielder Paul Davis, named as a coach.
"It feels good, I'm excited. I know it's Kettering Town and it isn't Premiership football," Gascoigne said.
"But the plans we have worked on with (consortium leader) Imraan Ladak for the past six weeks have been exciting."
The Midlands club, founded in 1872, is currently fifth in the Conference North - two divisions below the Football League.
They have been drawing crowds of about 1,000 to league games this season, and Gascoigne said the aim was to become a league club.
"They haven't been in the Football League in 133 years, so that will be one of the main objectives to get this team up there. That will be something for the supporters to look forward to," he said.
"I'm not going to say we'll do it this season or next season, there's a lot we can improve on, whether that's with the players we've got now or the players we bring in."
Just because he was a good player does not mean he will succeed there

From CT

Have your say on 606

Gascoigne won 57 England caps and was widely regarded as the most talented British player of his generation.
He was part of the Tottenham Hotspur team that won the FA Cup in 1991 although he seriously damaged his knee in a wild tackle early in the first half of their 2-1 extra-time win over Nottingham Forest.
This was the first in a series of injury problems, especially during his three years at Lazio.
He returned to Britain to find success at Rangers in Scotland, where he won the league title, before moving to Middlesbrough and Everton.
He played briefly for China's Gansu Tianma and England's Boston United as player-coach before retiring as a player in 2004.
Consortium leader Ladak said he would make money available for Gascoigne to spend, but stressed the club would not have unlimited funds.
"We've had a look at a couple of players over the past few weeks. A couple of clubs have come up with extortionate prices because they feel that the club's going to be awash with money," he said.
"We have a stadium issue that we need to sort out urgently because our lease is due to run out in the next few years.
"So while there will be money to spend, we won't be paying anything over an acceptable price for players."

Pardew extends West Ham contract

Pardew controversially joined West Ham from Reading

West Ham manager Alan Pardew has agreed a new five-year deal that will keep him at Upton Park until 2010.
Pardew, who has steered West Ham into ninth place on their Premiership return, is due to sign the contract after Saturday's game at Liverpool.
"I am delighted that Alan Pardew has committed his future to this club.
"He is one of the brightest young managers in the game and we are proud to have him at Upton Park," chairman Terry Brown told the club website.
To deliver quality Prem football with the financial constraints and the pressure he's been under is the stuff dreams are made of. He deserves his contract

From IM

Have your say on 606

"I have already paid tribute to the leadership qualities that brought West Ham United promotion to the Premier League but he has achieved much more than that over the last two years.
"Alan has shown himself to be a shrewd judge in the transfer market and I have been particularly impressed by the way he balances the success on the field against the business demands of this club.
"It has enabled us to put West Ham United in a strong financial position and build on last season's successes rather than simply stabilise.
"He has built an exciting young squad in the tradition of West Ham United and the club is full of optimism for the future."

Robson leads tributes to Haynes

Stars pay tribute to Haynes

Sir Bobby Robson has led the tributes after the funeral of former Fulham and England player Johnny Haynes.
Robson joined Sir Bobby Charlton, Alan Mullery, George Cohen and England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson to pay his respects at the service in Edinburgh.
"He was a wonderful passer of the ball, one of the best I've seen and I've been in football 50 years," said Robson.
"I've seen a lot of great players but in that sense he was unsurpassed. He was a valued friend."
Robson admitted his "distress" at the loss of Haynes, who died last week at the age of 71 after being involved in a car crash.
"The service was nice, very distinguished and George Cohen spoke especially well about Johnny," Robson said.
"We've lost a great friend, a great chum and he was a maestro in footballing terms.
"It's distressing. It's a long time since I was so distressed about the death of anybody to be honest."
Eriksson said: "I came to pay my respects to a great football player, he was a former England captain with 50 or 60 caps so I respect that.
"I have heard a lot about him and many say that (Roberto) Mancini played like him so he must have been a genius."
The first player to earn more than £100-per-week, Haynes was described as the David Beckham of his era.
The inside forward made 594 appearances for Fulham and won 56 England caps.
Haynes was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary last Monday after an accident on Dalry Road and died a day later.
The Craven Cottage club held a minute's silence in honour of "The Maestro" before their 2-0 win over Liverpool on Saturday.
Haynes had a spell as player-manager of Fulham after Sir Bobby Robson was sacked in 1968 and during his career turned down moves to Tottenham and AC Milan.

Kewell included in play-off squad

Kewell has only just returned to action for Liverpool

Australia have included Harry Kewell in their squad for next month's two-legged World Cup play-off against Uruguay.
The Liverpool midfielder was picked despite two groin operations in the last five months, but Newcastle's Craig Moore is out with a hamstring injury.
Kewell is one of 11 English-based players in the party, although Wigan goalkeeper John Filan is not included.
The first leg is in Montevideo on 12 November, with the return in Sydney on 16 November.
Australia's sole appearance at the World Cup was in 1974, in Germany, but they have lost play-off matches for places at the last two tournaments, losing to Uruguay last time in 2002.
FC Thun defender Ljubo Milicevic is the only addition to the squad that beat Jamaica 5-0 in London earlier this month.
"I've now had the opportunity to work with this group of players a few times and we continue to make improvements," said Hiddink.
"We have picked a squad that is flexible and will be able to adapt. This will be important across the two legs."
Australia will compete in the Asian qualifying group for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, rather than the Oceania group as they do at the moment, which should boost their chances of an securing an automatic qualifying place.
Australian squad for two-legged World Cup play-off against Uruguay: John Aloisi (Alaves, Spain), Marco Bresciano (Parma, Italy), Tim Cahill (Everton), Scott Chipperfield (Basel, Switzerland), Ante Covic (Hammarby, Sweden), Jason Culina (PSV Eindhoven), Ahmad Elrich (Fulham), Brett Emerton (Blackburn Rovers), Vince Grella (Parma, Italy), Joel Griffiths (Neuchatel Xamax, Switzerland), Zeljko Kalac (AC Milan, Italy), Harry Kewell (Liverpool), Stan Lazaridis (Birmingham City), Ljubo Milicevic (FC Thun, Switzerland), Lucas Neill (Blackburn Rovers), Tony Popovic (Crystal Palace), Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough), Josip Skoko (Wigan Athletic), Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory, Australia), Michael Thwaite (National Bucharest, Romania), Tony Vidmar (NAC Breda, Holland), Mark Viduka (Middlesbrough), Luke Wilkshire (Bristol City).

FA gives Robinson three-match ban

Fulham 2-3 West Brom (aet)

The Football Association has handed a three-match ban to West Brom's Paul Robinson after his red card at Fulham.
Robinson was charged with misconduct for using 'abusive and or insulting words to a match official' during Tuesday's 3-2 Carling Cup victory.
The defender has denied the charge and requested a personal hearing.
He will now miss Sunday's Premiership match with Newcastle and the following games with West Ham on 5 November and Everton on 19 November.
Robinson was sent off on Tuesday for kicking out at defender Zat Knight in extra time.
The full-back reacted to a push by Knight which left him sprawling in the advertising signs at Craven Cottage.
Albion initially lodged an appeal with the Football Association earlier but it was withdrawn a couple of hours later.
But the club will give Robinson their full support at the hearing, which is expected to take place on Thursday, 3 November at the FA's Soho Square headquarters.

England Women ease to biggest win

Smith found the target three times in England's record-breaking win

The England women's team cruised to the biggest win in their history with a 13-0 demolition of Hungary in their World Cup qualifier.
Arsenal striker Kelly Smith hit a hat-trick, while Eni Aluko, Alex Scott and Fara Williams all scored twice.
Rachel Yankey, Jody Handley, Katie Champan and Jo Potter also got themselves on the scoresheet.
The result leaves England top of their five-nation group table following their earlier 4-1 win against Austria.
And national coach Hope Powell said: "The main thing going into this match was guarding against complacency among the players.
"We worked on going for early goals and, when that came off, it was good to see the girls maintaining their standards."
England's next opponents are Holland, who defeated group favourites France 1-0.

The 32-year-old was in the second month of his loan spell and had made eight appearances for Forest, during which time he kept three clean sheets.
However, with Baggies first-choice stopper Chris Kirkland facing up to a month out with a rib injury, Hoult is returning to The Hawthorns.
Paul Gerrard, 32, will resume in goal at the City Ground.

Brighton awaiting Falmer verdict

The club submitted its planning application for Falmer in 2001

Brighton chairman Dick Knight says the club could not have done any more to get the go-ahead for their new stadium.
"We've campaigned very hard," he said. "It has been incredibly good-humoured and not in any way confrontational.
"Not only in Brighton, but the whole football community has campaigned to make an impression on John Prescott."
The Deputy Prime Minister will announce the outcome of the long-running inquiry into the proposed new 23,000 all-seater stadium at Falmer by Monday.
Brighton have been without a home since the Goldstone Ground was sold by previous owners in 1997.
They have been playing at the ill-suited Withdean, a 6,500-capacity athletics stadium, since 1999 following a spell groundsharing at Gillingham.
"It has been a national campaign that has shown Brighton need a new stadium," Knight added.
"Brighton cannot compete with other big-name clubs if we do not have this stadium. All we want is a level playing field and we just hope that John Prescott has got the message.
"He'll either tell us on Friday or on Monday. I've waited six and a half years, so I can wait another couple of days."

Bruce quits loan deal at Rovers

Defender Alex Bruce has cut short his loan move to Tranmere Rovers.
The 21-year-old, who has previously been farmed out to Oldham and Sheffield Wednesday, returns to Birmingham where he has yet to play for the first-team.
Bruce made 12 appearances for the Prenton Park outfit but lost his place to Paul Linwood after he was called back from a loan period at Wrexham.
The right-back's loan spell at Tranmere, which began in July, was scheduled to run until 22 January 2006.
